Re: "Do teachers hate their jobs?"

I read all the postings on this topic with great interest. There were some
people who intimated that they love teaching while hating their jobs. I
guess I would like to know what they mean by "teaching". I have also
noticed that the people who list many reasons why the job is becoming
untenable are high school teachers in highly specialized fields. Why is
this? Someone also made the comment that there are many applicants for
available jobs while people who have them don't seem to want them any more,
but stay in the job. Why is this? While it is true that every person in
any job is constricted, in one way or another, by "the powers that be",
teachers are still privileged, in the system, to be able to control the
conditions for student success within their immediate environment, the
classroom. What is the real problem here? Are we being asked to teach
students who don't want to be there, or are we being asked to question our
pedagogy and are afraid that we might find ourselves lacking? If we
examine our classroom practice in relation to how we want to be taught in
workshops or in graduate courses, how do we stack up?
