A new publication on technology integration in schools, from National School
Boards Association's Technology Program, is "Leadership & Technology: What
School Board Members Need to Know." In addition to aiding school board
members, it can be a good guide for administrators as well -- and something
administrators may want to offer their boardsl. It's designed to help
school leaders understand the importance of their own leadership, hurdle the
barriers to change, create strong tech plans and confront technology-related
issues.

The 194-page book opens with a 12-page overview of the technology planning
process, then treats topics such as the following in a workbook/discussion
guide format that makes them easy to digest. The purpose is to promote
discussion and consideration of issues and to offer background information
and resources. The book also includes a bibliography and glossary.

Some of the topics covered are:

Gauging attitudes toward change
Taking fear out of change
Characteristics of districts in transition
Defining the board's role
The administrator as a learning leader
Evidence of technology's effectiveness
Technology access issues at home and school
Funding tech plans
Software evaluation and copyright policy
Safe and ethical use of the Internet and other networks
Assistive technology for special education
Effective staff development practices
Tec Ed vs. Tech Prep vs. Electronic Classrooms
Computer literacy in the world of work
Implications of the Information Superhighway
Computers and gender
Building infrastructures that accommodate technology
Benchmarking, public relations, and program evaluation

Authors are Gerald Bailey (professor of education in the department of
educational administration and a technology consultant at Kansas State
University); Dan Lumley (assistant superintendent for the Spring Hill Public
Schools in Spring Hill, KS); and Deborah Dunbar (director of technology,
media and instructional programs at Gratiot-Isabella Regional Education
Service Center in Ithaca, MI).
