The system software has been corrupted somewhere along the way. A clean
reinstall with the orginal system disks is the best bet. Do this by
inserting the System Tools or Utilities disk, whichever came with that
machine. Then go into the system folder and throw away the Finder and the
System files. Restart and install the first install disk.
If you don't have the orginal disks, use Norton Utilities 3.1 if you have
that around. It will allow you to make a bootable Disk Doctor floppy for
that powerbook. It may fix the problem. Another option would be to
upgrade to System 7.5 or get the orginal system disks from Apple. Good
