Apple LC Ethernet Modification

Hello,

I pulled this out of a recent post to EDTECH. It has been editied for space
since the rest of the message did not apply to my point.

On the Apple Macintosh computers that share the LC style case (LC, LCII and
Performa series), everyone I've ever encountered has had a shielded audio
output jack on the motherboard. I think that the LC III does not have this
type of jack. When you install an Apple Ethernet card into the computer the
dangeling media adapter causes the ethernet board to pull down onto the
shield of the jack shorting a part called L1 to the shield and thus causing
the machine to reboot. This can be fixed by placing a small square of
electric tape (the black stuff) on the top of the audio output jack. You can
tell if you need this type of modification because the jack top is silver.
Once this modification has been made the machine will no longer restart.
Additionally you may want to secure the media adapter to the furniture, if
possible, with a self adhesive cable tie mount and cable tie. What to do is
snug the wire into the cable tie, not so tight as to pinch the wire. What
you want to do is provide extra support for the media adapter.

Hopes this helps.

BTW: I have taken pictures of the machines I "fixed" with this method and
hope to set up a page on my web site sometime soon with how to do this.
