The ACM is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the First Computer in
Philadephia on February 14th.
As to why study the history of computers, why not!
The IEEE/Computer Society "Computer" Journal has a new good column
called "looking.back" in each monthly issue dealing with the computing
pioneers born in that month and the inventions, events, and other
happenings that occurred.
There is a web site that has downloadable pictures of the early
computers (which I have misplaced at the moment).
