I have a Mac 5200/75 at school and have had several problems using it.
One of the major problems is that the chooser gets corrupted and this has
happened not only on my machine but on one at another school. When the
chooser gets corrupted you can't print or use the modem. What I had to do
was to reinstall the entire system folder. In order to do this you must
first rename your old system folder "Storage." Start up with your CD and
reinstall the system. Then go into the "storage" file and move all of the
control panels, extensions, etc. that you have added since you bought your
machine. It takes a lot of time but SOS-APPL will walk you through it. I
had to do this not only on the 5200 at school but also on my 6115CD at
home. However, I think the Mac OS System 7.5.1 software takes up so much
memory on a 5200 that freeze-ups are common due to lack of RAM. I keep
mine on Virtual Memory except when I use a program that is not compatible
with it. I do plan to add RAM.
Since I did that at school I have had less freeze-ups. Also I had to run
Norton's because of a problem in the b-tree and that has helped. To run
Norton's on a PowerMac you must start up from the CD and then run the
emergency disk that comes with Norton's. Norton's is set up for System
7.1 and therefore you cannot use the emergency disk without starting up
with the CD.
Good luck.
