A piece of software that I just recently ran across and have been amazed at
the results is called Reader Rabbits Interactive Journey. My daughter, age
5, could not read prior to me buying this program for home use. She had
just completed Kindergarten and could recognize some words, but not many.
She went through this package in 4 days (many hours per day, we couldn't
get her off it!!) with the accuracy setting at 90%. This was two weeks
ago. Friday night, she sat down and read Green Eggs and Ham to me for the
first time.

The software incorporates phonics, word recognition, sentence building, and
best of all, is fun for the kids. The one I purchased off the shelf was
$79.00 and runs in Mac, Windows and Windows 95. I would suggest taking a
look at it for reading skills.
