Hello, John:

There are at least 3 levels of video production and posst
production equipment you can choose from. you ask about broadcast
quality, and maybe that's exactly what you mean, but I come from that
world and believe you may well mean industrial or even pro-sumer level
gear. Let me tell you/everyone why: I just cannot believe that any high
school would or could afford broadcast quality in their TV production
classes, because such a school could expect to invest about a $1,000,000
in the room(s). That's right, a $million. If you or anyone is
interested in the details, let me know.

Briefly, such a facility would need at least two and preferrably three
cameras, a variety of lighting gear, a sound recorder and mix console, and
in today's world, not only two or three video recorders, but also the same
in hard disc recorders with about 20 gig capacity ecah. Then there are
character generators, time base correctors for each tape/disc machine.
The sound studio would need to be sound-proofed, and don't forget an
editing system. A broadcast calliber editing system is going to cost
somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000 by itself. Oh, I've forgotten
DVE's, and several other very pricey image and sound manipulation
devices, an Ultimatte for key work, etc. It all adds up.

A good industrial level suite of products with the same numbers as above
can be had for somewhere around $100,000, or 10% of broadcast. A
pro-sumer suite will cost under $20,000, without all the bells and
whistles, but good enough certainly for a high school class in production
and post.

Hope I've helped to put this all into perspective,

Bill
