Windows dies - HELP!

Of a sudden (with no catastrophic events) when I try to start windows for
workgroups, I get the logo (briefly) then it drops me to the DOS prompt
from which I typed "win". At this point the keyboard is hard locked up
and I must do a power off reset to regain control. I have reinstalled
Windows, both on top of itself and in a totally new directory, and it
does the same thing both places. What is spooky is that it seems to work
fine in DOS (I'm typing from DOS at this moment.)

Suggestions? I have the WORLD in Windows-based apps.....
