Basic Skills & Computers

Hello!

I'm looking for examples of how elementary kids are learning basic skills
while using computers. While this seems pretty obvious, I need real examples
for a web page I'm creating for our community to prove the value of
technology in schools and the need for change in the way kids acquire
knowledge and skills. Here is an example:

Last week my third and fourth graders videoconferenced with a scientist in
Antarctica. While this was an unplanned event (we were testing our camera),
suddenly it became a desperate need of several of the kids to find out where
McMurdo Air Station was in Antarctica. The kids took it upon themselves to
locate an atlas and use it to find the location of our scientist. Since
then, they've needed to call upon their understanding of time zones and their
skills with mathematics to determine appropriate times to try to contact
someone at the "bottom" of the world.

Any examples you could share would be greatly appreciated! Once I have the
home page done, I'll post its address for all to view.

If you'd also like to share your experiences with how learning is changing
because of computer technology, I'd be indebted! Thanks!
