CLAH - Teaching Commitee

The Teaching Committee is one of the special committees organized by the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH) to carry out its goal of improving the teaching of Latin American history.  Its members must be members of the Conference.  The Teaching Committee meets at the annual convention to conduct its formal business, to plan future activities, and to foster the exchange of ideas related to teaching. It also publishes regular columns in the CLAH newsletter and maintains this website to make available materials and resources essential to the teaching of Latin American history.

Roundtable 2010: New approaches to teaching the Latin American History survey

The CLAH Teaching and Teaching Materials Committee round table for the January 2010 conference in San Diego will focus on new approaches to teaching the Latin American History surveys. Inspired by a recent H-LatAm discussion thread on 'marketing' our courses to attract students, the committee seeks panelists who are not only 're-marketing' their courses but 're-imagining' how the surveys should be taught. In what innovative ways are teachers structuring the courses? How effective are these new structures compared to traditional country-study approaches? What teaching materials (texts, books, readers, document collections, etc.) work best in these courses? What are the pitfalls of these new ways? How do teachers justify including certain countries and topics in these new approaches while leaving out other countries and topics?

Ideally, the round table will include presenters on the modern survey, the colonial survey, and one-semester civilization surveys. People who teach the surveys outside of these traditional divides are also encouraged to submit a proposal.

Proposals should be sent to Kirk Shaffer (krs14@psu.edu) and Marc Becker (marc@yachana.org) by January 26, 2009.
