Beattie, Peter M. (Michigan State U.), The Third Annual Leslie Rout Memorial Talk on Brazil in the African Diaspora will be held in late February. We are planning to invite Dr. Mary Karasch to speak on slavery in Goias. The talk is open to the public and a date and time will be posted next Fall.
Claxton, Robert H. (State U. of West Georgia), the State U. of West Georgia has received a gift of $1 million for the perpetual support of its archaeology program. This donation comes from the family of Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Waring is regarded as the first person to make a systematic study of evidence of the Spanish presence in present-day Georgia. I created two new courses: "Latin American Environmental Issues in Historical Perspective" and "Latins in the United States"; Contributed to a new multidisciplinary course on Mexico which will culminate in a 10-day student trip to Mexico.

Salomon, Frank (U. of Wisconsin), the U. of Wisconsin 1996 Field Seminar in Ecuadorian Quichua Culture and Language took place in Otavalo, Ecuador, and environs July-Aug. 1996. It was sponsored under the Dept. of Education's Fulbright-Hayes Gro up Projects Abroad program, with cost-sharing from the Cyril W. Nave Fund. It set about to provide a select group of educators and other profes-sionals with a direct in-depth experience of Ecuadorian Quichua in its own context.
The staff were Project Dir. Frank Salomon, Lang. Instructor Carinen Chuquin, Field Instructor-Coord. Lynn Meisch, and two invaluable local teachers, Breenan Conterón of Ilumán village and Narciso Conejo of Peguche village. The project wa s administered by the Latin American and Iberian Studies Program and the Anthropology Dept. It also received valuable help from Dr. Gonzalo Cartagenova, Dir., Fulbright Commission of Ecuador, and Dr. Terry Davidson, the U.S. Cultural Attaché in Ecu ador.
Sweet, David (U. of California, Santa Cruz), the Latin American and Latino Studies Program established in 1972, now enrolls over two hundred undergraduate majors. Research activities are encouraged by the Chicano-Latino Research Center housed i n the Casa Latina at Merrill College, UCSC. More than a dozen full-time Latin Americanist faculty in Anthropology, Literature, Politics, Sociology, Music, Art History & Community Studies in addition to historians Maria Elena Diaz, Pedro Castillo, Lis beth Haas and David Sweet will be joined next Fall by economist Manuel Pastor and political scientist Jonathan Fox; with these additions it is expected that the program will be transformed within a year's time into a Board of Studies (Department).
