LETTER FROM THE SECRETARIAT
Dear
CLAH Members,
As I prepare to relinquish my
duties as the Executive Secretary of CLAH, I am happy to report
that CLAH is in excellent condition. Our finances are in order,
membership is, and the endowment funds are growing.
We've had some problems, of course,
among them some glitches in the San Francisco program. We are
trying to learn from these experiences and make our annual conference
better every year. Overall, however, I was pleased with the
attendance at our luncheon and cocktail party, and except for
one or two panels that didn't come off as scheduled, I'm generally
pleased with the results.
I can't possibly claim credit
for the success of the conference or the strength of CLAH at
this point. I've had the privilege of working with and getting
to know Lyman Johnson, Susan Socolow, Asunción Lavrin,
all of whom served CLAH with distinction. The success of CLAH
in recent years is a testament to their service and dedication.
I must also acknowledge the excellent service of our secretary,
Sandy Guthrie. As many of you know, she has been a most efficient
administrator of our day to day business. I couldn't have done
my job without her.
I was once worried about finding
a new home for CLAH this summer, but after we received strong
bids from Vanderbilt, Florida State, and the University of California
at Davis, I knew that CLAH would find a fine new home. For the
first time in CLAH history, the executive committee had to make
a tough decision between three competitive bids. We ultimately
awarded the secretariat to UC Davis, and I'm sure that Tom Holloway
will do an excellent job as executive secretary. I'd also like
to thank my colleagues at Vanderbilt and FSU for taking the
time to prepare excellent bids. I hope that you will continue
to support and serve CLAH.
Finally, I would like to thank
Michael Innis-Jimenez and Dennis Hidalgo for the contributions
to the General Committee meetings at the conference in January.
The CLAH regional chairs had the opportunity to meet the H-LATAM
editors and talk about policies and procedures related to the
book review process. Under their leadership, I expect to see
a notable increase in the quality and quantity of H-LATAM book
reviews. We are all indebted to them for bringing our two organizations
into a more productive working relationship.
In closing, let me thank Dain
Borges and the Program Committee for sifting through 39 panel
proposals for the upcoming January 2003 conference. It is not
likely that we can accommodate more than 24 panels, but it is
definitely likely that we will have another excellent conference.
Thank you all for your support and kindness over the last four
years.
Paul Dosal
Executive Secretary
