Message from the Secretary

Michael Conniff

Donathon Olliff

Next month we are electing a new vice president/president-elect, two General Committee members, and regional committee chairs. Please mark your ballot for these offices and send it in before the end of November.

Our affiliated listserv, H-LatAm, has moved to Michigan State, and coincidentally so has its able administrator, Jackie Kent. She provides a synopsis of Internet and Web services available in the H-LatAm section below.

Our membership continues to grow, adding 101 new scholars to our roster. Lots of the recent members are young historians and persons who teach overseas. If you know of someone who might profit from joining, be sure to let us know--we'll send out a brochure or an e-mail invitation. The secretariat has a new policy regarding dues. If your dues are 6 months in arrears, your membership will be canceled.

The Lombardis' Latin American History: a Teaching Atlas, is nearly out of print, and the press has asked us to consider developing a new one. Don Olliff has undertaken this project and would appreciate suggestions from members who have used this valuable source. Send your comments to the CLAH secretariat.

This year we have an unusually full schedule of Latin American sessions, thanks to Bill Beezley and the 1997 Program Committee. The CLAH program guide that you will find enclosed should have everything you need for the convention, even maps of the two hotels. If you attend, please take the guide with you--we will have very few copies at the meeting.

Remember that material submitted for the Newsletter is most easily and accurately incorporated when sent by e-mail.

We would appreciate your in-put with regard to sending out the CLAH newsletters on the internet instead of the usual hard copies. Advantages would be faster distribution, less expense to the organization, and the opportunity to save the newsletter on a diskette and print out the information as necessary. Diskettes take a lot less storage room than books. We look forward to hearing from you.
