Message From the President

Donna Guy

Please join us for the annual meeting in New York City, from January 2-5. If you need hotel information, please contact the AHA or our secretariat. We have a superb speaker scheduled for the luncheon, which will be held at B. Smith's, a great restaurant within walking distance from the hotels.

This issue of the Newsletter continues the commemoration of our 70th anniversary, with a brief history of CLAH drawn from back files dating to 1930. Hope you enjoy the essay, which was researched and written by Frank Robinson, a Ph.D. candidate at Auburn.

This is my last message as president, because Lyman will take over the job in January. I will pass along the fearsome CLAW at the luncheon, along with my best wishes for a pleasant and productive term.

I will be in Liverpool, attending the AHILA conference, when this issue of the Newsletter goes to press. This is one of several initiatives we have taken to build collaborative links with historical organizations in other countries. I will give a full report on our accomplishments at the January meeting. For notes on the Canadian and Caribbean historical societies, see the "Linkages" section below.

As I step down from the presidency, I have the pleasure of inaugurating the Hanke award, for turning dissertations into book manuscripts. This is the second new prize during my term--we also began the Cabrera award--which attests to the remarkable generosity of our members. Elsewhere in the Newsletter you will find a list of those who contributed to the Hanke and other awards.

Speaking of awards, please don't forget the Warren Dean fund, which we established to recognize scholarship in environmental history. This fund still needs donations in order to reach a viable level of endowment. This, like all CLAH contributions, is tax deductible.

Many thanks to all of you who paid dues promptly, allowing the secretariat to keep performing its work. The dues reminder for next year is enclosed--remember, if you pay by the end of December, you may take advantage of discount subscriptions listed on the same form.

With the start of a new school year, CLAH members will have the opportunity to meet new students and colleagues who are not members of CLAH. Please tell them of the benefits of being part of this prestigious organization and give them the email or "snail mail" address of the secretariat to obtain a membership application. Your personal endorsement is the best recruiting tool CLAH has!
