Oct. 31 - Nov. 3, 1996 - **** Change of Dates **** The Canadian Assoc. for Latin American and Caribbean Studies XXVII Congress 1996 "Latin America and the Caribbean in A Changing World: Patterns, Prospects and Problems" CERLAC, York U., Toronto, Ontario, Canada: CALACS has been informed that the next "Days of Action" protesting the Ontario provincial government fiscal cutbacks will take place on October 25-26, 1996. This Toronto-wide protest will be supported by a broad range of labour unions, community groups and social justice organizations. We believe that York U. will be directly affected and its normal activities disrupted.
Since many participants would not want to meet under these circumstances, we have changed the dates of the 1996 CALACS Congress to: THURS., OCT. 31 - SUN., NOV. 3, 1996.
We hope this change will not affect the plans of those attending the congress, and offer our apologies for any inconvenience caused. If earlier you received and posted a congress poster, would you kindly correct the dates, please.

June 30-July 4, 1997 - Bellagio Study and Conference Center, Italy Aug. 24-28, 1998 Intl Economic History Congress, Seville, Spain - Latin America and the World Economy in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: Explorations in Quantitative Economic History Conference Organizers of the two conferences are John H. Coatsworth and Alan M. Taylor
Aims: Our conferences will focus on recent work in the tradition of New Economic History. We seek papers which examine development in Latin America in the context of post-independence international economic relations and which explicitly use quantitative analysis, including approaches in the cliometric and new institutional traditions.
An ideal paper would blend economic theory, empirical evidence, formal techniques of inference and institutional considerations in an analysis of some dimension of the development process. We see this as one of the principal distinguishing features of the proposal, in a field where traditional approaches to economic history have been rarely complemented and informed by the new quantitative tradition.
Possible topics include, but are not restricted to: comparative macroeconomic performance, policy and long-run growth; intl monetary relations and domestic policy; human capital formation and growth; foreign investment and the macroeconomy; trade and specialization; export sector analysis; industry studies; import competition and response; transportation systems on land or water and social savings; development of market integration and its implications; long-run demographic change.
This area of research is undoubtedly an exciting and growing field. We want to attract many scholars from around the world and provide a chance for significant contacts on major issues in Latin American development which might spawn further conferences, projects, and publications, and thus strengthen the field.
General Information: 12 papers will be selected with one discussant per paper. Papers will be distributed prior to the conference to be read beforehand. We will allocate 15 minutes per paper, 15 minutes for discussants, and 60 minutes for general discussion. We anticipate a schedule of 4 papers per day over the 3 full days at Bellagio. Bellagio can house only 25 conference participants. The Bellagio conference will be a "pre-conference" in preparation for our scheduled "C"-session at the Intl. Economic History Congress in Seville. Time for presentations in Seville will be very restricted: we have one three-and-a-half-hour session. Space is relatively abundant, however, and we hope that the session will draw a large audience from among the hundreds attending the Congress.
Publication Plans: Papers should be prepared in 1996-97, one year in advance of the Congress, for presentation at Bellagio. However, the organizers want a formal publication outlet for an edited volume consisting of the full length papers accepted for the conference. The preparation of this edited volume will take place in 1997-98, so that the volume will be in print and on the bookstands by the time of the congress. We will try to secure both English and Spanish language publication of this volume.
Practical Arrangements: Bellagio 1997: We will be accommodated at the Villa Serbelloni as guests of the Rockefeller Foundation. We are presently seeking further funding to support the costs of participants' air travel to Milan. Please let us know if you can draw on funds from other institutions to cover the cost of your own air travel. Practical arrangements will be handled by the organizers and the staff of the Villa Serbelloni and Rockefeller Foundation.
Practical Arrangements: Seville 1998: Travel and accommodation at the Intl Economic History Congress will be the responsibility of individual participants. Practical arrangements will be handled by the Intl Economic History Assn.

AILASA '97 - Australia. As the twentieth century comes to a close, we remember the last colonial war fought over Latin America 100 years ago and the subsequent physical and conceptual realignments of boundaries and national identities that took place in the Iberian peninsula as well as the Americas. Contests for space have always existed in Spain, Portugal and the Americas, however, and continue today in the cultural, racial, social, sexual, environmental, religious, political and commercial arenas. This conference will look at these struggles over past, present and future geographies, and the colonial, post-colonial and neo-colonial issues they raise and represent.
Papers are invited from scholars and students interested in the study of these contested spaces before and after the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese. While panels will be primarily based around the disciplines of economics, history, geography, literature and cultural
studies, and politics, contributions by anthropologists and members of interdisciplinary fields such as environmental and media studies are welcomed, and papers not directly related to the themes outlined above will also be included.
A seminar entitled "Markets and Cultures in Transition: Latin America and the Pacific Rim" will precede the AILASA Conference, on 9 July. Submission Deadline - 1 March 1997

Nov. 5-8, 1997, Southern Historical Association Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA will include four sessions on Latin American history.
The program committee invites suggestions for papers and sessions. We would prefer proposals that include a complete panel [chair, commentator, and two-three papers] People that submit individual papers will receive consideration although the committee may have difficulty placing the papers with similar topics. It is important that we receive excellent proposals because of the recent decline in attendance at Latin American sessions, meaning the Association has started to reduce the number of sessions.
All proposals should include a one page abstract for each paper that covers the thesis and significance of the paper and an abridged vitae for each participant. Session proposals should include a cover sheet listing the session or paper title, and names and affiliations of presenters. Please submit five copies of proposals to: Kyle Longley, Dept. of His., Arizona State U., Box 872501, Tempe, AZ 85287. Tel: (602) 965-5778 Fax: (602)965-0310 E-mail: Longley@asuvm.inre.asu.edu. The deadline for CLAH-AHA panels is Oct. 31, 1997. The deadline for CLAH panels is Dec. 1, 1997. Send suggestions and proposals to any member of the program committee:
