Richard Jensen, executive director of H-NET (of which H-CIVWAR is an
element), helpfully reminds our list members (below) that we can get
tables of contents of most journals through CARL (the Colorado Alliance of
Research Libraries), and he even provides instructions on how to do it.
Rather than think of CARL as a substitute for H-CIVWAR's listings of
tables of contents, perhaps we should think of CARL as a tool we can use
to post the titles of those articles relevant to this list (i.e., Civil
War and Reconstruction), articles that researchers might miss unless
alerted to them by fellow list members or unless we begin full-scale
searches of CARL and other research aids.
In any case, thanks to Richard Jensen for the information below. And
please continue to volunteer to post tables of contents for journals you
read.

H-NET GUIDE to CARL

TELNET DATABASE.CARL.ORG
1. 5 <enter> (= vt100 terminal, most common type)
2. 1 <enter> (you want to get to UNCOVER)
3. hit <enter> 5-6 times [later set up a profile if you want]
4. get the main menu:
N = search for name of author
W = search for words in the title
B = select name of journal; Browse through table of contents
a) E to examine the isses they have
b) If the journal interests you, REVEAL will give you a free
subscription to the table of contents.
1) You need to fill out a name/address & credit card form to
use REVEAL. You will NOT be charged anything unless you
specifically request to purchase a fax copy of a specific
item.
5. CARL will fax you a copy of any article for about $10. It
takes about one day. The searches are all FREE.
6. CARL will not email the search to you like MELVYL does.
7. to quit CARL, go back to main menu, //EXIT
8. CARL's REVEAL service will send the tables of contents
straight to your emailbox, free.
