This film came up in a discussion of _Gettysburg_ last year on
H-Civwar. If I remember correctly, a number of messages provided
reading suggestions on black troops.

The film's battle scenes carried quite a wallop for me. They much
more effectively conveyed the mass confusion and horror of Civil War
combat than did the staged and stilted performances in Ted Turner's
extravaganza. I thought that the scene depicting combat in the piney
woods was particularly effective.
