the men were close to home and there was no military activity, they would go
home on a pass for anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
When they were a little further away from home, they would write home to
have somebody bring whatever they needed. William Hyslop Sumner Burgwyn's
diaries have been recently published and they are very full with regard to
this question.
