[x H-Urban]

There are 45 economic history course syllabi available on the Cliometric
Society's gopher.

This information was posted on another list I belong to, ECONHIST, and it
looked rather useful to me. I have tried it; it works and will in fact
prove very useful to me. I have rewritten the instructions below. Please
*do* write the originators of the syllabi to let them know when you are
using the syllabi.

As a further note, when I gophered in, I noticed that a Directory of
Economic Historians was also available. I did not have a chance to look
at it, but I did want to point out to H-Urban subscribers that the sort of
information contained in the Cliometric society's gopher is exactly the
sort of thing we moderators are working on developing for H-Urban. This
is one reason why we are so stringent in asking for surveys. We hope to
have a Directory of Urban Historians available, as well as a directory of
syallabi -- among other things.

To access the gopher of the Cliometric Society, you need to "telnet." As
I mentioned before, you do this either at your mainframe operating system
prompt or by exiting your e-mailer and using whatever facility is set up
on your department's network (ask your departmental guru for help).

Here are the steps:

1. telnet cs.muohio.edu
2. hit [enter] when prompted for a password. You will get the message
"login incorrect" and a new login prompt.
3. at the new login prompt, type:

gopher [enter]

4. at the new password prompt, type your e-mail address [enter]
5. from the gopher menu that appears, choose

Economic History Course Syllabi

6. Select the Read Me file. When finished, go back Up (hit U for "up").
7. Select Index to find a subject of interest. Make a note of the
professor's name. Then go back Up.
8. Now select that professor's syllabus by moving your cursor up or down
to the professor's name.

Most mailers have a function that allows you to print or save the file.
If you don't know how to do that, you should find out!

Good luck. Have fun.
