A factor you should take into account with Buford's withdrawal is that
almost universally Civil War cavalry seldom was used for bloody
fighting. The tremendous time and money needed to train and equip
cavalry made most commanders reluctant to expose them to heavy
fighting. Buford's losses were slight compared to an infantry command,
but for cavalry were condsidered signifigant. Compare similar figures
for other battles.
