CALL FOR PAPERS

November 11-13, 1994
To: Members of the All-UC Group in Economic History and Fellow
Travelers.
From: Conference Organizing Committee: R. Bin Wong (UCI), Chair;
R. Bin Wong (University of California, Irvine), Chair;
Susan Carter (University of California, Riverside);
Peter Lindert (University of California, Davis);
Ken Pomeranz (University of California, Irvine);
Jean-Laurent Rosenthal (UCLA).
On behalf of the All-UC Group in Economic History and the
Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, UCI, we invite paper
proposals for a conference on ~Divergence and Convergence in the
Global History of Economic Development.~ The conference is
slated to be held from Friday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. through
noon on Sunday, November 13 at the Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel
in Pasadena, California.
As implied by the conference title, we seek a conference
exploring what forces promoted, and what forces retarded,
convergence between regions, ethnic groups, output sectors, and
classes. In particular, what policies served to promote or retard
convergence? We hope that several of the conference papers will
extend the debate over these issues back several centuries and
around the globe, including papers dealing with Asian, African, and
Latin American economic history.
-As soon as possible: inform one of us of any good ideas for
paper presentations, by yourself or by others. Also, inform others
of the conference.
-By Tuesday, September 6, 1994, please send at least an
abstract of any proposed paper to us at the address above. We hope
to submit the abstracts of the selected papers to the Cliometrics
Society Newsletter.
-By Friday, September 30, we will send a tentative program to
all members and other prospective participants.
-By Thursday, October 6, all requests to be invited to teh
conference should be received at the the address above. We will
send out invitations soon thereafter.
-By Monday, October 17, the conference drafts of all papers
must arrive at the address above.

of the conference as possible.
