Hello
In referring to "mailbases" you probably mean mailing lists in general.
However the Mailbase actually refers to a specific mailing list service
at Newcastle University which is funded centrally by the
Joint Info Systems Committee (JISC) of the HEFCs for the benefit of
the UK academic and research community.
Mailbase runs about 600 lists of which SOSIG is one. Anyone
from the community can propose a new list if one for their particular
interest does not exist.
To search the for a topic on the Mailbase system you can use e-mail.
Send the command:
find lists keyword
(replacing "keyword" with your search string)
as the only text of an e-mail message to:
and you'll receive a message containing details of all of the lists
with the keyword in their name or description.
Or you can also search for lists using the Mailbase Gopher.
If you have a Gopher client point it at mailbase.ac.uk
If you dont have a client then telnet to:
bubl.bath.ac.uk
login as bubl
Select item 7 from the top level menu and then item 2 to get into Mailbase.
You can then use the "searching this Gopher.." menu to search the lists or
move to the Special Subject Groups menu where you can find the
Social Science lists grouped together.
I hope this helps
Regards
Dave
