Bob,

Grant is my all-time favorite CW figure. The story of his life is inspiring
and mystifying - from utter obscurity to the heights of fame and fortune only
to lose it all and then regain his reputation after deatth. What a tale -
what a man!

I recommend Sylvanus Cadwallader's "Three Years With Grant" - he was a reporter
who followed Grant's camp during the war, worked for the NYTimes (I believe)
and was a pipeline to Elihu Washburn, Grant's Ohio-Congressman mentor. It's
a delightfully gossipy book and many of his Grant stories were later borne
out by official papers and others'reminiscences.

Also try (what I believ is titled) "Lee and Grant: a Dual Biography". It
jumps back and forth from one to the other general, and their lives and
careers are juxtaposed in a most fascinating manner. Sorry I cannot now
recall the author's name, but the book is sympathetic and full of small
revealing details.

BTW, as I sit here typing this at the Circulation Desk, there is a portrait
of Grant across the way, over the copy machine. It is TERRIBLE!!! Every time
I go to make copies, I search in vain for some resemblence to the General.
But yet it's labeled, "U.S. Grant, 18th President".
