H-CivWar:

I have accepted an offer to write a chapter in a guide to research
materials in the Civil War. It is to be published by Greenwood Press and
is directed primarily at students who need to be informed of the kinds of
sources that are available. The general editor is Steven Woodworth of
Tocca Falls College. My assignment is to write the chapter "Social
Concerns -- South" which I take to mean the home front for the
Confederacy. I am, naturally, familiar with the basic literature in the
field, but my assumption is that there are a lot good materials that I
don't know.

I am inviting members of the H-Civil War net and the H-South to send in
their suggestions. What are your favorate works on the Confederate home
front? What are some good but obscure works that I (as a North Carolina
specialist) probably wouldn't know?

Lest anyone be concerned that their labors will enrich me unduly, the
editor informed all contributors that their remuneration would consist of
one copy of the book.

I thank all contributors in advance.
