Question about "A Stillness at Appomattox"

Hello,
I just finished writing a graduate paper on Bruce Catton's use of
history in "A Stillness at Appomattox." One aspect of the book really
bothered me and I was hoping to get some insight from others. Why did he
skip from the end of 1864 to the end of March 1865? My guess is that
January through March of 1865 was filled with not much more than trench
warfare, something the reader would not find compelling. But this is just
a guess. Can someone enlighten me (or suggest a source for a book review
that deals with this)?
