Robert Harris, moderator of H-CIVWAR, has asked me to act as
co-moderator of that list and to provide some background material on
myself. I have been a professor of history at the University of North
Texas since 1968 (Ph.D., Univ. of Virginia, 1968). My research interests
have shifted back and forth over the last quarter century between Texas
topics and Virginia topics, but always on the Civil War/Reconstruction
period. With Randolph Campbell (also at North Texas) I wrote two books
on antebellum Texas (_Wealth and Power in Antebellum Texas_ [1977] and
_Planters and Plain Folk: Agriculture in Antebellum Texas_ [1987]). As
usual, there were spinoff articles from both those projects in various
journals. More recently, I wrote a book on Reconstruction in Virginia
(_Republicans and Reconstruction in Virginia, 1856-70_ [1991]). At
present, I am working on various articles involving Reconstruction in
Virginia (mostly on local- and county-level leaders and on the Joint
Committee on Reconstruction). In addition, I have begun a long-term
project for a book on Walker's Texas Division, C.S.A., during the war.
This was the largest unit of Texans in the war and the only Confederate
division composed of men from a single state. It served exclusively in
the Trans-Mississippi theater. I hope to combine quantitative
socioeconomic analysis with traditional narrative history in the book
("Maris Vinovskis meets Robert Krick" -- that would be ideal).

I have found H-CIVWAR (and the whole idea behind H-NET) stimulating
and very helpful in my own work. I have made contacts with other
historians working in similar areas, and I have learned a great deal
about what other scholars are working on and how other classroom teachers
handle the war and Reconstruction. With a bit of coddling from my
mentor, Robert Harris, I will try to keep H-CIVWAR moving along.
