Moderator's note: A gentle reminder that what is important about this thread
is the historical context of the novel. For example, the liklihood that
an Irish Roman Catholic would be an established slaveowner in antebellum GA.

Prof. Simpson's comment about Charles O'Hara being a gambler rings a
bell in my dim memory: I seem to recall from reading the book that
he won Tara (or at least the land) in a poker game. Is that correct?
