...about the site as well as the sight of the Confederate defensive
position on Missionary Ridge... ...our poor boys could not lower the
sights of their cannon to repell the rush of invaders. The defensive
line is not too far from my home, and almost on a daily basis as I
drive across "The Ridge" on my way to school, I think about the obviously
poor positioning of the defenders' line... ....but then... we weren't
there to offer our wisdom... were we?
One of the local experts on the battle, the editor of the afternoon
newspaper, has a great description of the battle situation.... Chattanooga
Free-Press Editor Lee Anderson grew up on the Ridge and says that he
"played the battle" almost everyday as a boy... ...during Anderson's
childhood a few veterans were still around to share memories... Anderson
says the Confederates were young boys, afraid, hungry, filthy dirty, poorly
trained... ...and were no match for the screaming hordes of fat
northerners who came charging up that steep hillside--cannon angle or no
proper cannon angle.
