Regarding the question of how the development of primary sources has
shaped the writing of the Civil War: An obvious place to look would be
the impact of the publication of the WPA interviews with ex-slaves. In
1972 Greenwood Press brought out the first series of these
autobiographies, all of whom lived through the Civil War. Without access
to these interviews, I think our understanding of the African-American
experience in the Civil War would be significantly poorer than it is today.
