The best way to subscribe to a list is to send a message to the Listserv.
Listserv is an automatic piece of software which keeps track of commands
entered into a mainframe. Any time you want to subscribe, unsub, run a
search, etc., you have to send commands to the *Listserv* and not to the
list in question.

In the case of AmWest-L@dosuni1, the name of the list is "AmWest-L," and
the node, or the address at which the list is located, is "dosuni1."
To subscribe you would send the following message to Listserv@dosuni1:

subscribe amwest-l yourname, your institution

In my case I would type: mail listserv@dosuni1

And would send as the text of the message:

subscribe amwest-l Robert Alan Harris, Binghamton University

If you need any more information on technical subjects, please do not hesitate
to write me at my personal address.
