MILITARY HISTORY OF THE WEST (formerly MILITARY HISTORY OF THE
SOUTHWEST) invites manuscripts on any military topic that falls within the
journjournal's geographical boundaries of coverage -- i.e., the Mississippi
River valley and all states and territories west of that line. The
journal's definition of "military history" is also broad and includes
the social and economic aspects of military life as well as strategy,
tactics, and operations. In the last four numbers of the journal,
several articles have been published that might interest members of
h-CivWar: "Petticoats, Promotions, and Military Assignments:
Favoritism and the Antebellum Career of James Longstreet," by William
Garrett Piston; "The Mississippi Marine Brigade: Fighting Rebel
Guerrillas on Western Waters," by Anne J. Bailey; "An Experience in
Soldier's Life: The Civil War Letters of Volney Ellis, Adjutant,
Twelfth Texas Infantry, Walker's Texas Division, C.S.A.," by Thomas
W. Cutrer; "In Relief of Port Hudson: Richard Taylor's 1863 Lafourche
Offensive," by Stephen S. Michot; and "Two 'Lost' Battle Reports:
Horace Randal's and Joseph L. Brent's Reports on the Battles of
Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, 8 and 9 April 1864," by Jane Harris
Johansson and David H. Johansson.
The journal's title has changed three times since its first issue in
1961. Volumes 1-8 (1961-70) were published under the title TEXAS
MILITARY HISTORY; volumes 9-18 (1971-88), under the title MILITARY
HISTORY OF TEXAS AND THE SOUTHWEST; volumes 19-22 (1989-92), under
the title MILITARY HISTORY OF THE SOUTHWEST. Volume 24 and later
volumes are being published with the title MILITARY HISTORY OF THE
WEST (1993-). Subscriptions are $8.00 for individuals, $12.00 for
institutions, and $20.00 for foreign subscribers. Subscriptions
should be sent to Journals Division, University of North Texas Press,
P.O. Box 13856, Denton, TX 76203-3856. Contributions and other
inquiries should be sent to the editors at MILITARY HISTORY OF THE
WEST, P.O. Box 13735, Department of History, Denton, Texas 76203-3735.
Articles in the journal are indexed and abstracted in HISTORICAL
ABSTRACTS and AMERICA: HISTORY AND LIFE.
