I'm pleased to announce that the Archives & Archivists list is once again
operational, coming to you from its new home on LISTSERV@MiamiU.MUOhio.Edu.
I will distribute the introductory Archives Welcome file that all new
subscribers automatically receive, as a reminder of all those LISTSERV
commands we know and love :-)
In particular, I would call your attention to the sections of the Archives
Welcome file that deal with specifying posting topics in the Subject: field
of messages intended for redistribution through this list. There are
presently eleven defined topics for the Archives & Archivists list:
Begin your Subject:
field with: ... if your posting concerns:
Cert Archival certification
Educ Archival education
Jobs Positions available and/or wanted
List The Archives list itself
Mtg Conferences/meetings/seminars/workshops
Mentor Mentoring
NARA National Archives & Records Administration [US]
Practice Archival practice
SAA Society of American Archivists
Theory Archival theory
and the all-purpose
Other Anything not covered in the categories above
As explained in the ARchives Welcome document, consistent use of these
defined topic descriptors in your Subject: field improve searching
capability in the Archives list logfiles, *and* they allow for more
user subscription configuration options (i.e., you can choose to
receive or not to receive postings dealing with certain subjects).
(The default value for topics received by Archives subscribers is "ALL,
OTHER," meaning that unless your tell LISTSERV otherwise, you will
receive all Archives postings regardless of what their Subject: field
contains.)
To wind up this administrativia, I just want to note that I have given
much thought to the comments and suggestions made during the Midwest
Archives Conference (MAC) Fall Meeting program on this LISTSERV list,
as well as to specific proposals I have received from several thoughtful
observers of this list, most notably including Richard Pearce-Moses.
I hope that with use of topic keywords in our Subject fields, continuing
courtesy and thoughtful reflection on the part of all list participants,
and closer involvement in day-to-day list activity on my part (now that
the list and I are finally at the same institution :-) that the
Archives & Archivists list's value to the profession will increase.
As ever, I remain most appreciative for your presence and participation
on the Archives list, and I welcome and encourage your comments and
suggestions
John
