The Organization of American Historians, in partnership with the
American Studies Association, the European Association for American
Studies and others, is establishiing an international clearinghouse
newsletter, CONNECTIONS, for Americanists. In the clearinghouse
newsletter individual scholars of American history and culture
will post descriptions of their needs, offerings, and interests
and learn about the needs, offerings, and interests of their peers
around the world.

Believing that conversations among individuals encourage people
to express their needs and hopes more naturally than bureaucratic
arrangements among institutions and states do, we hope that
CONNECTIONS will provide a simple and informal means for scholars
to identify people and resources that may meet their needs.
Although these type of conversations are already occurring on a
number of e-mail networks, most of our colleagues around the
world do not have access to or do not use e-mail. Therefore,
CONNECTIONS will be a periodic newsletter published in both
print and electronic forms. The newsletter will be distributed
through a variety of networks (e.g., OAH, ASA, EAAS,
and other national and regional American studies associations)
coordinated by the clearinghouse coordinator. If you would
like to receive the electronic version, please send a message
to the e-mail address listed below.

CONNECTIONS will list notices of a wide variety of
opportunities: for exchanges of housing and teaching
responsibilities between scholars; for collaborative
research projects; for graduate study abroad; for sharing
of books, ideas, exhibition materials, and course syllabi;
for exchanges of positions by public historians, museum
scholars, archivists, teachers, or others involved with the
study of American history and culture.

We invite individuals to send "postings" of their needs,
offerings, and/or interests for the first issue, which
is scheduled for the spring of 1994. There is no charge
for submitting an item to the clearinghouse, but submissions
must be limited to 100 words.

Individuals posting notices to the clearinghouse must include
their names and mailing addresses and are encouraged to also
include their telephone number, fax number, and/or e-mail
address. Submissions should be sent to the clearinghouse
coordinator in Bloomington:

University collections are especially good in U.S. 19th-century
political, sectionalism, and Civil War history as well as
American literature. Your home will need to accommodate my
