Gaines Foster's <Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy> gives a lot of the
institutional history . Charles Reagan Wilson looks at religion and its
links. There is a new book on U. North Carolina Press that I haven't
yet seen on Confederate soldiers' homes. It's called <Living Monuments>
and is by R. B. Rosenburg. While I think Foster is excellent on the 30th
(whoops, make that 20th) century movement, it seems to me harder to find
a lot of the pre-1890s beginnings. Jane Censer, George Mason University
