The invalid Corps was later called the Veteran Reserve Corps, which, in
1864 had approximately 28,000 men. Composed of men who were too ill or
incapacitated to work, the Invalid Corps performed light tasks in
support of the Union armies, and acted as a way of freeing up the
able-bodied for battle. Invalid corps memebers were recruited from
those men under the control of the Medical Department or from those had
been discharged on a surgeon's certificate but were prepared to
reenlist.
