I was able to see a sneak preview of the Gettysburg movie last night in
Nashville, TN before its general release on Friday. All things considered
I thought it was well done. There were a few spots where the acting was
sub-par, but the battle scenes (and there were a lot of them) were impressive.
The movie lasts four-and-a-half hours but really didn't seem that long, and
parts of it were quite compelling. All of the major characters were, I
thought, admirably portrayed with the exception of Lee, who came across as
being in a world of his own, almost oblivious to reality. The clear heroes
in the movie were James Longstreet and Joshua Chamberlain. For those who
see the movie in coming weeks, I would be interested to know your reaction
to the subtle but numerous references to the Southern aristocracy.
