AWLA broadly seeks to promote networking among African Women lawyers and to enhance the status of African women and children.

Our specific objectives are as follows:

  • to strengthen networking between African women lawyers;
  • to share information and to lobby for gender equality in Africa through legislative reform, public education and advocacy;
  • to promote the principles of the United Nations, the Organization of African Unity and the African Commission on Human and People's Rights;
  • to enhance the legal status of women in Africa.

To achieve these objectives, the Association organizes specific activities aimed at providing open fora for discussing all matters affecting women and children in Africa, disseminating knowledge of laws on the Continent and strengthening the institutional capacity of member organizations.
