'From Flappers to Slackers: Youth Rebellion in Twentieth-Century America'
This course focuses on the interdisciplinary study of American youth in the twentieth century, with an emphasis on the cultural trope of 'youth rebellion.' The course draws on scholarship in history, psychology, and sociology, as well as contemporary newspaper accounts of youth rebellion, and relevant fiction. The course also relies on the use of primary source materials from across the century as a means of identifying recurrent themes in the public concern over the actions of American youth.
