“Pedagogy of the Superhero”

Created by: Neil Shyminsky, York University

Write a one-page proposal (with an accompanying visual – conceptual art, a book cover, a poster, etc.) that you might send to a publisher/studio for the creation of a new, anti-oppressive superhero comic, TV show, film, or action figure.

Keep some of these questions in mind:

· Who is your hero and what makes him or her “super”?

· What acts of heroism are his or her specialty?

· How does he or she address the problems surrounding the representation of childhood/children in superhero stories?

· How can he or she help foster dialogue between children and adults?

· How does he or she manage a praxis of superheroic action and antioppressive thought?

This is an individual activity. Due at the beginning of tutorial.
