conference program and abstracts of presentations**

Marquette University will host the Third Biennial Conference of the Society for the History of Children and Youth on August 4-7, 2005.  Sessions will take place in the conference center of the Raynor Memorial Libraries.  Click here to see the program.**  On-campus housing is available in Straz Hall, about a five-minute walk from the conference center, as well as in two downtown hotels.  To download a map of the campus, click here.

*Click here for a pre-registration form, which includes the registration fee for the conference and two-years' dues to the SHCY.  You can also reserve box lunches for Friday and Saturday (the program committee has scheduled two noon-time programs) and make reservations for the Friday night dinner.

Arriving in Milwaukee: The Mitchell International Airport website offers several options for getting downtown from the airport.   A taxi to Marquette and the downtown area costs roughly $25.  The number 80 Milwaukee County Transit System bus takes you from the terminal to Wisconsin Ave. and 6th street (about five blocks from Straz Tower and nearly at the doorstop of the Holiday Inn.   Once in town, you need to arrange for taxi service (they are rarely driving around looking for fares).   Here are a few companies and their phone numbers: AAA Yellow Cab, 262-547-8294; American United Taxi, 414-220-5000; and Veteran Taxi Cab 414-220-5000.   However, the bus system (see below) is quite good.

Housing Options: You need to make separate arrangements for conference housing.  Based on the preferences of attendees at the 2003 conference in Milwaukee, I have reserved a number of rooms in Straz Tower and a handful in two moderately priced hotels.

Straz Tower. This is MU's nicest residence hall, with air conditioning and individual baths.  Rates range from $41 per night for a single to $68 per night for a quad.   Call 414-288-7208 by July 15 for reservations.

The Park East Hotel, near Lake Michigan, about a five-minute drive from Marquette.  $68 plus tax per night.  Call 1-800-328-7275 for reservations by July 1.  A shuttle bus can be arranged for transportation to and from campus.

The Holiday Inn City Centre, about a ten-minute walk from the conference center.  $89 plus tax per night.  Call 414-273-2950 for reservations by July 1.

In Your Spare Time: Marquette is located in downtown Milwaukee, just a short walk or a shorter bus ride from the center of the entertainment district along the Milwaukee River.   The website for the Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau includes maps, information about recreational and cultural events, and countless other topics of interest to visitors. OnMilwaukee.com offers information about dining opportunities, including a list of some of the restaurants near the Marquette campus.

Marquette is located a short walk or a quick bus ride from a number of entertainment and restaurant venues.  A number of county bus routes stop at the Marquette campus; check for maps and other information here.   During the summer, trolleys operate throughout downtown, where you can check out the Milwaukee Riverwalk and the trendy Cathedral Square district; this map offers a guide to attractions there and in other neighborhoods east of the Milwaukee River.   Just north is Brady Street, an old Italian neighborhood and hippie hangout in the 1960s that is now home to some of the city's finest restaurants (and is easily reached on the Number 30 bus).  Another neighborhood with an abundance of restaurants and watering holes is The Historic Third Ward, just south of downtown.

If you're into livestock, carnival rides, or creampuffs, the Wisconsin State Fair kicks off during the conference.  State Fair Park is a ten-minute drive from campus.
