Cervantes, official organ of the Cervantes Society of America, publishes scholarly articles in English and Spanish on Cervantes' life and works, reviews and notes of interest to cervantistas. Twice yearly. Subscription to Cervantes is a part of membership in the Cervantes Society of America, which also publishes a Newsletter. $20.00 a year for individuals, $40.00 for institutions, $30.00 for couples, and $10.00 for students. Membership is open to all persons interested in Cervantes. 	“Según es cristiana la gente”: The Quintanar of Persiles y Sigismunda and the Archival Record.

			Con frecuencia Cervantes incorpora personas de la vida real en sus ficciones; por ejemplo, el regreso de Antonio de Villaseñor a su pueblo natal manchego, Quintanar de la Orden, episodio clave de Persiles y Sigismunda. Los Villaseñores eran hidalgos principales en el Quintanar del siglo XVI. En el episodio, el pueblo se convierte en una utopía cristiana, donde todas las casas pueden servir como hospitales de peregrinos, “según es cristiana la gente.” ¿Corresponde esta imagen a la realidad histórica? Tomando los detalles del Quintanar ficticio como punto de partida, este ensayo ofrece una serie de calas en los archivos, demostrando así la irónica distancia entre estas dos representaciones del pueblo de Antonio de Villaseñor. Más allá de la especulación biográfica, se plantea la posibilidad de una “ironía histórica” que no tiene necesariamente que reflejar la opinión del autor para formar parte del significado actual de Persiles.
	Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda: Una crítica cervantina de la alegoresis emblemática

			The relationship between the heterogeneous and episodic nature of Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda and the dominant religious and political discourses of baroque Spain is a recurring topic of discussion in Cervantes studies. The purpose of my inquiry is to further this discussion by focusing on Cervantes' treatment of the body and its relation to the production of language and meaning. Specifically, I am interested in comparing Cervantes' use of what Mikhail Bakhtin has termed grotesque realism with the baroque aesthetic and philosophy of desengaño. At issue is Cervantes' use and critique of “the emblematic mode of representation,” in which the corpse often functions as an allegorical sign of failed human aspirations. Cervantes articulates an alternative aesthetic and moral enterprise to baroque desengaño and the emblem, by privileging and problematizing the relationship between language and the body, refusing, in effect, to discard the grotesque body as a barrier to knowledge or redemption. To the contrary, Cervantes reframes the incorrigible nature of the human body—its sensuality as well as its bestiality—in order to ground his discursive practices and moral vision in an earthly arena, where other tongues must be learned and other bodies touched in order to break through the silence of desengaño and its symbolic interdictions.
	Affective Dimensions in Don Quijote

			En este ensayo se plantea un acercamiento al estudio de la emoción en Don Quijote. De hecho, el tratamiento cervantino de la emotividad concuerda con algunos de los postulados más aceptados hoy en día: en general, la emoción se presenta no como antítesis de la razón sino como componente de ella, y se tiene en cuenta su naturaleza plenamente social además de individual.
	The Espíritu de Merlín, Renaissance Magic, and the Limitations of Being Human in La casa de los celos

			Se suele considerar La casa de los celos como una obra menor, debido a su aparente falta de coherencia. Este artículo propone una nueva lectura a partir del personaje denominado Espíritu de Merlín, encantador artúrico que permite, en último término, la elaboración de una serie de cuestiones filosóficas (tales como la búsqueda de conocimiento o el potencial del ser humano para influir en su entorno social) que funcionan como hilo conector entre episodios aparentemente no relacionados. A través de esta perspectiva, se busca demostrar que esta comedia es una meditación profunda y coherente sobre la condición del ser humano.
