Charter of the International Catholic History Discussion List

1. The International Catholic History Discussion List is an international and interdisciplinary discussion list for scholars and students whose primary academic foci are the history and/or cultures of the Catholic Church and communities defined by a Catholic religious identity. The editors and Advisory Board invite students and scholars of the Catholic Church and Catholic communities to participate in this international, interdisciplinary discussion list that is intended to serve as a forum where scholars may freely exchange ideas, methodologies, and practical applications of their work in an environment that transcends conventional regional and disciplinary boundaries. This list is not intended to be a forum for people who are interested in making individual confessions of faith, but for the promotion of scholarly discussion. Editors exercise the discretion to determine material they deem inappropriate for the list. The editors and Advisory Board encourage and welcome the membership of persons from every faith or of no faith.

2. The list is currently sponsored by the American Catholic Historical Association and the Canadian Catholic Historical Association. Additional organizations may be invited to sponsor the list, but must receive the approval of current sponsors.

3. The Advisory Board appoints the list editors; sets official list policies and guidelines; referees incoming articles, reviews, and other materials; and settles all issues appealed by the editors. The Advisory Board consists of two representatives from each sponsoring organization who serves for two years, and an equal number of scholars-at-large who serves for three years. Advisors appointed by the sponsors, in consultation with the editors, appoint the at-large members. Board members may be reappointed to succeed themselves directly once, after which time they must step down. They may be eligible for service on the Advisory Board again after two or three years, respectively. In the event of a vacancy, a departing advisor representing a sponsoring organization will be appointed by the organization in question in consultation with the remaining advisors and the editors; an at-large advisor will be appointed by the remaining advisors in consultation with the editors. Anyone interested in serving on the Advisory Board should notify the current on-line editor. The sponsoring orgaanizations alternately, beginning with the CCHA in 2002, shall also, in consultation with current members of the Advisory Board and with the editors, appoint a chair for the Advisory Board (i.e., one of their appointees to the Board), who will normally serve for a two-year period, renewable.

4. The editors will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and screening the membership list; moderating on-line discussions; commissioning and disseminating articles and book reviews, and soliciting book reviewers; establishing and maintaining a web site and discussion logs. They will serve at the pleasure of the Advisory Board. Anyone interested in serving as an editor should notify the current on-line editor. The Advisory Board, in consultation with current editors, will appoint a Coordinating Editor from among current editors, normally to serve for a two-year term.

5. The editors will have the authority to enroll subscribers on the list. All subscribers to the list must provide the following information: name, institutional affiliation, position/occupation, e-mail address, academic/research interests, and reason for wanting to join the discussion list.

6. Any editor, Advisory Board member, or the executive bodies of the sponsoring organizations may propose amendments to the above Charter. All the above shall have an opportunity to discuss the proposed amendments on-line. When the current editor concludes that sufficient discussion has taken place, he or she shall call for a vote by the members of the Advisory Board and current editors. An amendment that receives majority support will become part of the appropriate section of the Charter.
