Getting Around Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a comparatively small town in terms of area. Some distances can easily be walked. And Frankfurt is a safe city; no need to be worried about walking around. It also has an excellent integrated public transit system. Our colleagues at the GUG have provided some specific information about the meeting venues and the hotels in relation to travel.

Airport

The Frankfurt International Airport is about 12 miles and 15 minutes from downtown Frankfurt. Attendees can take the S-Bahn from the airport to the central train station (Hauptwache). From there, they can take a taxi or transit to their specific location. Of course, taxis are also available at the airport; the fare downtown is approximately € 30. The Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof and the Intercontinental operate courtesy shuttles.

Frankfurt Transit System

All three types of transportation serving Frankfurt are run centrally by the Rhein-Main Verkehrsverbund (Rhine-Main Transport Association—RMV). Their website (in English) provides maps and trip route and fare calculators. One can find on the home page the RMV planner referred to below.

Some hotels are within walking distance of the campus where sessions will be held; all are near stops on the extensive transit system. Attendees can take the underground (U-Bahn), streetcar (tram), or bus (Niederflurbus). Tickets are dispensed by machines, where one can buy a single-fare ticket for Frankfurt (Einzelfahrkarte), a day ticket (Tageskarte), or, for those staying longer, a weekly ticket (Wochenkarte). There is a language setting on the ticket machines.

One can see the full system map here, but for convenience, the section below focuses on the area of the BHC venues and hotels.

Like most underground systems, the U-Bahn directions are understood by the names of the endpoints of each line. For travel between the University and the Römer, for example, attendees would take the U-Bahn lines U1, U2, U3, or U8 in the direction of Frankfurt (Main) Südbahnhof, from Frankfurt (Main) Holzhausenstraße to Frankfurt (Main) Hauptwache.

From the Airport to the City Center

Those arriving by plane can take the S-Bahn at Frankfurt (Main) Regionalbahnhof (see airport for directions). A journey to the city center (Frankfurt (Main) Hauptwache station) will take about 15 minutes. From there, use the RMV planner to find your way to individual hotels.
