For many, Milan is Italy's first city, even if Rome is the administrative capital of the country. Yet Milan (almost 1,300,000 inhabitants) is Italy's financial capital, the home of the stock exchange, and it lies at the heartland of the industrial part of the country.
Milan's name is often linked with huge international exhibitions and trade fairs (it will host Expo 2015), high finance, and large-scale industry. But Milan also means cutting-edge design and especially fashion. Milan designers are famous all over the world and the "fashion district" of Milan (centered in the area between via Montenapoleone, via Spiga, and via Manzoni) has become a shopping mecca for those looking for luxury and glamor.
However, if today Milan is a hectic fashion and business capital, the city has a unique and rich history that is mirrored in a wealth of artistic masterpieces of great beauty (such as the Duomo (the Gothic cathedral) or Leonardo Da Vinci's "Last Supper"). Milan is also a good starting point for other destinations in Northern Italy, such as Lake Como and the Alps, while Venice can be reached by train in 2,5 hours.
The conference will be hosted at Bocconi University (founded in 1902)the first Italian university to grant a degree in economics. Today Bocconi is a major research university, contributing to the advancement of European higher education by teaching business and economic knowledge to prospective managers and researchers from all over the world. The university features an urban campuslocated close to the city center and next door to the thriving Navigli districtthat has recently been enriched by the newly inaugurated Grafton Building, which has been awarded the World Building of the Year Award and the Learning Category Award at the World Architecture Festival 2008.
