Established 2009/2/14
This email list has been established for the exchange of academic research and teaching information about Yogâcāra Buddhism, as well as for the engagement of Yogâcāra Studies with the discourse of historically, philosophically, and methodologically related systems such as Abhidharma, hetuvidya, Tathāgatagarbha, Huayan, Phenomenology, and modern scientific areas such as Psychology and Biology.
Like H-Buddhism, a fundamental purpose of the list is to serve as a conduit for communication and discourse between specialist researchers. Thus, the same general principles for membership will apply, and the same academic rigor will be expected in posting to the list, along with the technical restriction of no top-posting. The list will differing from H-Buddhism, however, in the fact that more interactive discussion will take place.
The list will have a basic web site attached to it, to allow for the uploading of articles and other research/teaching materials.
We expect that the primary language of communication on the list will be English, but we also encourage Yogâcāra scholars from various linguistic regions to post and interact in their own language. It is assumed that most subscribers on this list will be able to read most posts in languages other than English, even if they cannot readily respond in those languages. It will be seen as acceptable if a subscriber responds in her or his own language to a post made in another language.
Membership is open to:
The mechanism for subscribing/unsubscribing is at http://nine.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/yogacara. Unless you are well enough known by the present list administrator (Charles Muller) that you can assume he will recognize your name upon your subscription request, you will need to send send a separate mail introducing yourself to <acmuller {"at-mark"} jj.em-net.net.jp> in order for your application to be considered. Please include in the subject line the words "Yogacara List Subscription".
The list will be edited by a rotating team of academic specialists who will have full discretion as to the posting of messages. Messages that show inadequate care and preparation will not be posted. For this purpose, please see our posting guidelines.
From among the list editors, one (or a few) membership referees will be chosen to handle incoming applications. This will be a critical stage of the operation, since the careful selection of subscribers, along with a fair warning regarding discourse quality can go a long way toward solving many problems in advance.
