Introductory Statement for Miles Fletcher

I would like to introduce myself to the H-JAPAN list. I am a professor
of Japanese history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
My research interests lie in the field of modern Japan. Previously I
have done research on intellectuals in the 1920s and 1930s (the Showa
Kenkyukai) and the business community and national trade policy in the
same period. My current project is a study of the rise of Japan's cotton
spinning industry from its start in the Meiji era to the postwar period
as a case study in the process of industrialization in Japan. I take a
particular interest in state-business relations and the ways in which the
textile industry governed itself.

My teaching interests range from a large survey class on "The World
since 1945" to a survey on "Modern East Asia," specific courses on
"Imperial Japan, 1868-1945" and "Japan since 1945," and seminars on "The
Dropping of the Atomic Bombs and Its Legacy" and "The Pacific War:
Origins and Aftermath."

Joining H-JAPAN is my first venture into a list-server, and I appreciate
the effort of the organizers in settig it up.
