Some people on this list might be interested in "Translate Japan," a
literary translation competition for people who've not had a translation
published, sponsored by Shizuoka Prefecture. The first prize (2, actually,
for the best translations into English and French) is 1 million yen and a
year's study in Shizuoka. Since the judging committee is headed by Donald
Keene, I assume they're serious.

To find out more, check out their home page
(http://www.sphere.ad.jp/shizuoka) email them
(shizuoka@po.infosphere.or.jp) or write to the
Izu Literary Festival Committee, Culture Planning Section, Culture Department,
Shizuoka Prefectural Board of Education, 9-6 Ohte-machi, Shizuoka-shi,
Shizuoka-ken 420.
