Greetings,
I am Clay Dube and I teach Asian history at Berea College, a liberal arts
school in Kentucky, USA. My own research is on modern Chinese history,
particularly how the massive political and economic changes of the twentieth-
century have affected the social structure and norms of small towns. I have
benefitted from community studies carried out in Japan and from the work of
Japanese scholars studying Chinese communities.
Here at Berea I teach a number of courses focusing on Japan (Japanese
History: Origins to 1800 and Japan since 1800) or which have a significant Japan
component (Introduction to Asia, Modern East Asia, East Asian Images of the US,
and American Images of East Asia). I am anxious to exchange ideas concerning
teaching about Japanese history and contemporary society and I am grateful to H-
Net and the editors for fostering this forum.
smiling,
Clay Dube
