JAPANSTUDIEN 9: CALL FOR PAPERS
-Consumer and Service in the Postindustrial Society-

Japanstudien is a journal published once a year by the German Institute for
Japanese Studies, Tokyo. The journal includes articles on the culture,
economy, society, and politics of modern Japan, and German-Japanese
relations. Contributions on those topics are welcome from scholars in any
academic discipline.
Most issues of Japanstudien focus on a particular topic. Volume 9,
whose publication is expected by autumn 1997 is titled:

Consumer and Service in the Postindustrial Society

Politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, academics and journalists are
currently engaged in a debate on the orientation of Japanese business and
society in the post-bubble age. Key terms such as consumer, leisure and
service society reflect both a search for new economic incentives as well as
an exploration of social alternatives. Contributions may discuss the above
topics from different viewpoints and using various methods. Possible fields
of study are: political discourse, consumption structure, consumer groups,
consumer movements, consumption in the bubble economy, consumers and
identity, consumer culture in the media and literature, fashion and trends,
materialism, leisure and service industry, jobs in the tertiary sector,
welfare services, care for senior citizens, education, information and
communication.
Authors are encouraged to analyse the development, implications,
risk and chances for their particular area of study within the framework of
Japan as a postindustrial consumer and service society.

Abstracts (one to two pages) should be submitted to the Institute by June
30, 1996. The manuscript itself (about 20-25 double-spaced pages) should
arrive at the Institute by January 31, 1997.

Articles that have been previously published or accepted for publication
will not be accepted by Japanstudien. Manuscripts are read anonymously by
our referees. The Institute also encourages younger scholars to submit
essays.
